salon style art arrangement
wondering what to do with all the different bits and pieces of art you’ve been amassing… or looking for an interesting way to display family photos or pictures from a recent trip? salon style art arrangements are both a hip and pleasing way to bring disparate items together onto one focal wall, putting the odds and ends you love together in a creative work of wall art all its own.
while the trend has been revived in the last half century, the term ‘salon style’ comes from the 17th and 19th centuries, when art students’ work was amassed in the Salon Carré at the Louvre, in Paris, for review and critique. to fit as much work as possible onto the four walls of that ‘Square Salon’, paintings and drawings were hung side by side, above and below, resulting in the groupings we have come to know and love.
when, in 1737, formerly exclusive Salon shows were opened to the public, a marked shift in cultural participation was already underway – opening the art world beyond the royal court to the thousands who flocked to the Salon to be inspired, appalled, provoked and delighted. (for more on the Salon’s history, see this great post at Apartment Therapy.)
an artful dividing wall
in the home, a salon style wall can be the perfect way to share and see all of those works, photographs and favorite pieces you’ve been storing in a dark closet. the room divider above becomes a brilliant viewing space, with works of different shapes and sizes, in varying materials and colors working together to create a custom quilt of inspiration on an otherwise blank wall.
beyond the frame
for collections of smaller works, photos or drawings, a little scamper outside the frame can spice up an otherwise neglected wall space.
gathering small into large
perfect for both traditional as well, salon style arrangements add pattern and visual texture in a timeless way.
taking salon style arrangements to their absolute limit, a newsroom or bulletin board method of layering photos, postcards, magazine images across an entire wall can create a highly personalized wall surface full of interest, color, place and personality.
